Pourquoi les sachets de thé en plastique sont-ils nocifs pour la santé ?

Why are plastic tea bags harmful to health?

Tea is often perceived as a healthy and natural beverage. However, the way it's packaged can compromise its benefits. Many brands use plastic or nylon bags, which, when in contact with hot water, can release particles that are potentially harmful to health.

A study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology found that a single nylon or PET (polyethylene terephthalate) tea bag can release up to 11.6 billion microplastics and 3.1 billion nanoparticles when brewed in hot water. These particles, invisible to the naked eye, can be ingested and accumulate in the body.

Impacts on human health

Microplastics aren't just found in water; they've been detected in blood, the placenta, breast milk, and even the human brain. According to a French parliamentary report, these particles can cause inflammation, disrupt the endocrine system, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

What healthy alternatives are there?

To fully enjoy the benefits of tea without risks:

  • Opt for loose teas : use stainless steel or glass infusers.

  • Choose biodegradable bags : choose those made from unbleached paper, without glue or staples.

  • Avoid shiny or pyramid-shaped bags : they are often made of plastic.
